Once upon a time, Jim played rock n' roll and contemporary acoustic music. He got married. He had kids-four of them.
Jim discovered one day his grandfather was Scots Irish. His mother told him so.
"I shall learn some Scottish tunes and pay homage to my ancestors," said Jim.
He learned a few.
"This is great music!" thought Jim. He learned more.
A person heard him sing some of them and booked him to play St. Patrick's Day.
"Lovely. I don't know any Irish music," thought he. He learned some.
Before he knew it, he was changing the repertoire around to Irish and Scottish folk music.
His third born child and only girl, Holly, came of age and started singing. Jim was impressed.
"I'll break her into the act," said Jim. And so he did.
And they became a father/daughter singing team.
Then they met Mark Davis, who played violin, guitar, and mandolin. And they performed even more.
They recorded two albums: Of Gaels and Saints and Celtic Harmonies. They were well received.
After a period of time in which Holly got married and had three children and Jim had heart failure and eventually got a heart transplant, they decided to do one more recording.
As the first few Scottish songs he learned would be a tribute to his ancestors, so would this CD.
Only one problem: a genealogical search of his pedigree ended in Pennsylvania.
So you'll just have to take his word for it. Because he took his mother's.
Two other children pitched in. Matthew developed a website (jimandholly.com) and Jacob drew pictures and assembled artwork on a computer.
Jim and Holly's new CD, Caledonian Shadow, is the result of that effort.
