Winnipeg is a city known for its cold weather, but it is now home to one of the hottest up and coming country artists around, Liza May Johnson. Her debut album,âGive me a Reasonâ has people of all ages taking notice and feeling the heat!

The CD This album shows off Liza's strong and soulful voice, which has been compared to the likes of Carrie Underwood and Martina McBride. Her talents are not only limited to her powerful vocals, she is also a talented songwriter. Eight out of the ten songs on this CD are originals, and the two remaining are creative interpretations of old time favourites. The CD was recorded at Mom and Pop Studios in Winnipeg, Manitoba and produced by Myron Schulz.

Lizaâs Story Liza grew up under strong musical influence and at a young age had a great ear for music. She spent the younger years of her musical career taking vocal lessons, learning the piano and the guitar. Liza then went on to study music at college, where her passion for song-writing and recording grew. She started her music career as a Gospel singer and had success with the release of her Gospel CD. Liza quickly found that her love for singing and writing country music was something that she wanted to pursue, so she jumped at the chance to record some of her songs. She has been widely acknowledged for her vocal talents and has won awards that include:
A city wide vocal talent competition which she won at the tender age of 12
A nomination for a Shai award for Best New Vocalist of the Year (for her gospel album)
Vocalist of the Year and Performance of the Year at college
Liza is an accomplished performer, who has performed at special events, fundraisers and concerts with audiences of up to 3000 people. Liza May is an amazing vocalist, performer and songwriter and she is excited for the many opportunities that await her in country music .

Liza attributes all her musical ability to her maternal grandmother, May Parkes. She was very gifted in music and used to travel with a radio program across Canada playing the piano and singing until she married and raised her family. Unfortunately May passed away from cancer at an early age, leaving behind a legacy of music. âI never got to meet her but I feel like a part of her is still here whenever I singâ. Like a lot of soul singers, Liza gained experience singing when she and her mother used to sing duets at church functions, in choir productions etc.

Growing up in a sports minded family with three older brothers, Liza played sports but made time to pursue her music. She wrote a few songs in her teens but really began to focus on it a few years later, when some of her friends were getting married. They always wanted her to sing but it wasnât easy to find good wedding songs, so she started to write them. After studying music at Briercrest College, gaining some confidence in her writing abilities and teaching herself guitar, she released her first album, âBeyond meâ. It was a contemporary gospel album full of songs about her faith. A few years later, her passion for writing eventually led to the songs on her new album, âGive Me a Reasonâ. This is Lizaâs first country/pop album. Eight of the songs are original, with two being covers of a couple of old favourites. She hopes that this album will have a wider audience.
