In 2009, Toronto company Theatrefront commissioned a quartet of plays centred on a fictional haunted mill in Ontario. Four different playwrights each contributed a chapter (Matthew MacFadzean, Hannah Moscovitch, Tara Beagan and Damien Atkins), creating an epic tapestry of stories spanning four hundred years. Drawing on local history, this tetralogy framed individual stories of perceived betrayal and bloody revenge against a backdrop of clashing and merging cultures (British, French and Huron), and ran for two seasons, earning numerous awards and accolades. The entire production featured a detailed music score by composer Richard Feren, who imparted a specific identity to each of the four chapters, while also unifying them with an indelible thematic motif, and saturating it all with characteristically spooky atmosphere. This commemorative disc provides the highlights of the score, complete with text excerpts and horrific sound effects.
