AMANTES

Written by the Australian composer, Trevor Hart, Amantes is a series of 4 interconnected jazz suites on the stages of loving. It was inspired by the words of Mary Woolstonecraft. "Life without love is a desert". This large work has been described by critics as a 'evocative', 'filmic', " a deep musical and emotional experience'. Each piece is like a painting in an exhibition whose grand theme is the folly of human emotions.

The 4 suites are: 1. The Desert 2. Love Poems 3 Discordancia and 4. Songs of Experience. "I believe this is a universal human experience. I wanted to use the vast expanse of the Australian desert as a metaphor for life without love", says Trevor. In Amantes, Jazz is used as a language, a reference point from which the musicians could improvise.

Recorded in an oak lined village hall and an old abandoned museum, Amantes was performed by a cast of stellar musicians: Trevor Hart on trumpet, James Ryan on saxes, virtuoso John Rodgers on violin and piano, Andrew Shaw on Double bass and drum maestro Grant Collins.

TREVOR HART

Trevor is an Australian contemporary composer, trumpet player, and bandleader of the renowned Trevor Hart Quartet, the Trevor Hart Pocket Orchestra and Black Cat Circle. As a composer, Trevor is a creatively original auteur, who presents innovative ideas clearly. His compositions are a unique approach to improvised music that draws from the well of jazz, African, Spanish, Indian, contemporary classical and avant guarde. They create musical worlds that have been described as a deep musical and emotional experience.

Trevor's compositions use jazz as a language and reference point to create a distinctive type of lyrical free jazz. His compositions are range from large jazz suites to contemporary opera to deconstructed jazz pop of Black Cat Circle. They are often based on complex musical notions that, to the listener appear simple. In these compositions, each musician contributes something of themselves to make a musical idea complete. " I believe that music should be a democratic creative performance experience, " says Trevor.

Amantes and the following cd Bike! Bike! received rave reviews nationally. As well as writing for his various ensembles, Trevor has composed and was the librettist of a contemporary opera On Bloomsday. set in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley night clubs. The Trevor Hart Quartet is widely known for their legendary performances at Rics Bar, a famous hole in the wall in Brisbane's Valley Mall and for their appearances at concerts and festivals around Australia.
They perform at an intuitive level. Each performance is unique; the composition being the starting point of a musical journey. "They plunge into the music ...with energy, fun and exciting improvisations that come from a shared intuition which, to the casual ear, sounds almost as if the parts have been written rather than being the result of spontaneous impulse'," observed jazz critic David Bentley.
