This is the masterpiece that proves Toru Dodo's amazing talent
by Chihiro Nakayama

The opening track that starts off with an impressive introduction, that reminds you of Horowitz's rendition of Moszkowski, proves nothing but Toru Dodo's amazing talent.
I'm wondering if any other Japanese pianist can parallel to him at this point, who has his own style and play authentic jazz. Maybe he can be compared to Brad Mehldau on the basis of both of them can use their left hand so dexterous. The first thing I noticed was that (I also wrote this for his previous CD) his sense about the articulation on keys, dynamics, timing, beat and groove is very high level. It's beyond some of the pianists who has classical background so can move their fingers quickly. He knows how to swing, the right way of playing jazz piano. His fresh harmony on #3 & # 10 and his unique rhythm pattern on #1.#4,#6 are very innovative. No wonder Benny Golson praised him when they played in NY where Dodo lives. It's very high level but not self - indulgent. Not unconventional.
I felt every performance on this CD was beautiful. I'm sure real jazz fans can appreciate his masterful original compositions. There are a couple of famous tunes (#2 & #9) in it so I think beginners can enjoy it as well.
Nowadays, the piano music is a big trend in Japan but I have to say it would be superficial if Toru Dodo were not recognized. This is a masterpiece.
