Unique jazz that combines modern compositions and improvisation with past traditions and virtuoso guitar playing.
7 MP3 Songs
JAZZ: Bebop, JAZZ: Free Jazz
Details:
The Uptowner has been home to Jack Grassel and Kirk Tatnall the third Sunday of each month for over four years now. Using Jack's compositions, a stereo guitar-like instrument called a "super-ax", and an on-fire percussionist, Ernie Adams (Al DiMeola), this trio improvises some of the best music in the area.
Jack and Kirk have spent many years perfecting and playing the "super-ax". The instrument has both bass and guitar strings which allow them to take turns soloing and comping for each other. When one solos, the other complements with chords on the guitar section and lines on the bass section, eliminating the need for a bass player.
The music draws from the entire range of jazz tradition, including bebop, modern, latin, ballads, and free improvisation. Jack sums it up nicely, "We put the history and future of music in the blender and play that."
