Zoë Keating is a cellist and composer based in San Francisco. She uses layers and layers of cello to create densely textured, rhythmically and melodically rich landscapes of sound. Her music appeals to a wide spectrum of listeners, from fans of post-rock to acoustic ambient to classical.
Zoë's music has been on public television, on the SciFi channel, and is on rotation on Echoes, distributed by Public Radio International. She recently composed and recorded the soundtrack for the German film "Frozen Angels", which premiered at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival and was best documentary winner at the 2005 Nyon Festival.
Born in Canada, Ms. Keating began her musical eduation at the age of 8. She studied cello at the Eastman School of Music, Sarah Lawrence College and the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole in Italy. Since 1995 she has focused on non-classical cello, improvisation and compositon. She has recorded and performed with numerous musicians, including DJ Shadow, Tarentel and John Vanderslice and has written music for modern dance and theater productions.
Ms. Keating is also a member of the Brooklyn-based cello-rock group Rasputina, founded by Nirvana cellist Melora Creager. Together they have recorded two albums, "Frustration Plantation" (Instinct) and "A Radical Recital" (Filthy Bonnet/Rykodisc) and are currently recording on a third to be released in 2006.
