This collection of songs was written over six very intense weeks in August and September, 2009, and recorded quickly from September to November of the same year. I was under a self-imposed deadline to finish these songs by mid-November 2009 (they began as a class project), and so I tried to keep these recordings as simple and sparse as possible -- even demoish. But I like the simplicity, and think it works well for my voice, the style of songs I write, and the recording equipment I had at hand (GarageBand and powered condenser mic).

2009 was not a particularly good year, and these 18 songs reflect that. I've been writing and recording music for almost 25 years, since 16 years, trying to make sense of loneliness, but these songs are probably my rawest emotionally. And some of my most accessible. One listener described "Paddles" as "a feel-good song that isn't." Most of these songs are like that. More than a few of these tunes are deceptively upbeat.

If you've ever been lonely, or angry, or lost, or messed your life up, or been subject to the capricious whims of the incompetent, or exiled and unsure you'd ever end up back where you belonged, then there's a song or two here for you.
