SUSAN SALIDOR Biography

Susan Salidor is an award-winning childrenâs music composer and performer with the heart of a teacher. Come and Make a Circle: 20 Terrific Tunes for Kids and Teachers (2003), has been honored with four prestigious awards: Parentsâ Choice Award, Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Gold Award, a NAPPA Award, and an iParenting Media Award. Susanâs first recording, Little Voices In My Head (1995), received an Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Award and was named âOne of the yearâs five best childrenâs recordingsâ by Sesame Street Parent Magazine. Her second recording, Susan Salidor: By Heart (1996), was honored with a Parentsâ Choice Gold Award for Excellence and received unanimous praise in the Chicago Tribune, Nashville Parent, Parentsâ Magazine, ALA Booklist, and Family Fun Magazine, which called By Heart âan album to savor.â Color Me Singing (1998), Susanâs third kidsâ recording, was chosen as a selection in Book-of-the-Month Clubâs Sound Review Catalog which reaches an estimated 1.6 million people month. Color Me Singing also a Parentsâ Choice Gold Award, an Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Platinum Audio Award 2000, as well as a âListen Up!â award from Publishers Weekly. Her fourth recording, Shiny New Shoes (2001), was awarded a Parentsâ Choice Silver Award and in his Chicago Parent review, Fred Koch writes that Shiny New Shoes âbrims with delightful songs and is filled with expert musicianship.â

Susan has also been honored as a songwriter with several ASCAP Popular Awards for songwriting. In addition, âColor Me Singing,â is featured in a primary school textbook, Making Music (Scott Foresman/Silver Burdett). Susanâs recordings are recommended in The Best of Everything for Your Baby (Krantz/Exley, Prentice Hall), and her song, âRuby B.,â appears in the first edition of Ruby Bridgesâ autobiography Through My Eyes (Scholastic Press). She recently published The Susan Salidor Songbook, a songbook and CD set of original music from her first four recordings. Susan is also the co-host of âKids Play Radioâ a weekly broadcast on Chicagoâs WLUW 88.7 FM.

Susanâs concert venues include schools, libraries, colleges, theatres, childrenâs museums, music festivals and bookstores throughout the country. On the educational front, her music workshops, Sure-Fire Hits for Preschool Teachers, Sure-Fire Hits 2: Just the Songs, and Come and Make a Circle, have received rave reviews at professional teaching conferences nationwide. She also served as an âArtist in Residenceâ for the Rockford Public Schoolsâ Early Childhood Program from 2000-2002 teaching master classes and creating music workshops. Susan and husband Jay Rehak collaborated on a kidsâ show, Noahâs Ark: The Musical, which has been produced at theatres in Chicago and Michigan.
