SOMETIMES WHY
Tim Melton, Chart Attack Magazine

Let's face it, we live in a world bred musically on the run of the mill, the middle of the road, and the bottom of the barrel, but have no fear true music fans for there is asylum in the form of Toronto's SOMETIMES WHY.

Looking back the band's seed was planted in the summer of 1998 at a communal musicians house that acted as home to members of such bands as Change Of Heart, and Sticky Rice. A house filled with lots of creative energy felt by all who lived there to be sure.

It was at the "Spadina House," that drummer/vocalist Jay Thomson, and guitarist John Pogue began jamming on simple song structures that Thomson had begun forging in the basement.

Luckily in the fall of that year, long time friend and bassist Stephen Perry arrived in Toronto from Vancouver and filled in the final piece of the sound puzzle that was to become SOMETIMES WHY.

In 2000 the band kicked out the EP Memorandum. Two years later they released their first full-length recording, the well received "To: All Loose Endsâ¦". T.A.L.E was re-released by Engineer Records UK in 2003 after a distribution deal was set up. With Engineer's help, the band got their music to fans throughout Europe.

Which brings us to the now.

SOMETIMES WHY'S sophomore full-length release, 2004's "Keepsake," shows a growth in the band that is quite startling truth be told, and stands as the band's most progressive, yet refined statement to date. Keepsake is currently available to all of Europe on Engineer Records UK, as well as now being available throughout the States on Engineer Records USA.

Produced by Doctor's Rob Higgins, Keepsake hits its mark on all levels. From the title track's mind-trip-verse-meets-soaring-chorus-vibe to the catchy yet offbeat swagger of the video/single"Bitter Pills" (which went directly into Medium rotation on Much Loud and Much Music in January 2005 and is still getting airplay 11 months later), Keepsake gives you something for your head to keep both sonically and lyrically.

Witness a SOMETIMES WHY show and you'll see that the band is no slouch in the live arena either. With a successful 2005 NXNE showcase and two successful tours to the US in the summer and fall of this year, SOMETIMES WHY is riding the momentum that their DIY work ethic and true Indie status is earning.

This band has done it all on their own and will continue to do so for some time to come. Tracks are already being worked for a third full length effort to be recorded in summer 2006. Give this band a listen and check them out before someone from another city tells you they rock.
