JAZZ: Free Jazz, ELECTRONIC: Experimental

Details:
A little more than a decade after his initial contribution to the NYC music scene alongside leading voices in modern improvised music and nearly fifteen years after the first encounter with visionary composer Joe Maneri and his 72-note virtual pitch continuum, and as the first release from Brooklyn NY new creative music label SONUS REX comes NYC Guitar Virtuoso/Composer Sten Hostfalt's MACROSCOPE, the eagerly anticipated follow-up to the critically acclaimed '02 solo album "29 Pieces for The Microtonal Guitar live at Knitting Factory New York", a work described as groundbreaking and a landmark of sorts.

Just like the previous work, to a great extent involving and dealing with music focused on exploring the parameter of pitch, and also recorded solo in an attended session, in one single take with no overdubs and with minor post-editing only, Macroscope differs from the 29 pieces recording in a few ways. Obviously in terms of texture and timbre, as only one guitar was used on macroscope and more electronics, loops/samples and pre-recorded material replaced the '02 record's acoustic and prepared guitar tracks.

Most significantly however, and most likely so primarily as a result of a serie of 2005-06 NYC and US East Coast solo live performances, as the album title suggests, Macroscope displays a considerably more elevated and developed state of control over the pitch paramenter in an improvisatory manner.

The self-invented techniques to interpret Maneri's 72-note system on the traditional 6-string/12-fret guitar have here become second nature, as clearly heard both in the instrumental improvisations and the live layered and electronically in-performance manipulated samples and loops.

A greater degree of creative freedom with tuning is here apparent as well. In this case, after an invitation by guitarist, master educator and mentor Jon Damian, randomly chosen during a Microtonal Clinic and collective interplay session at Berklee College Of Music's Creative Workshop earlier the same day, the tuning was altered, changed or similarly adjusted at will during the actual performance, according to each improvisation or compositional thought respectively.
