Shantel Nicole Grace grew up on a cattle ranch in Sylvan Grove, Kansas, population 321. The town boasts one grocery store, a post office, a café, a saloon, a gas station, a bank, a grain elevator and not a single stoplight. She has a very strong attachment to her family and draws on her relationships and personal experiences as inspiration for her songs.
Music has been a part of Shantel's life from a very early age. She began playing piano when she was only six years old and she wrote her first song at age 13. After forming a rock band called "D10", she toured for two years in the greater Kansas City area and parts of the Midwest. She later went solo, and opened for Sawyer Brown at the 1996 Kansas State Fair. At age 19, Shantel released an independent CD entitled "Colors" featuring gourteen of her original songs. She went on to study classical piano and voice at the University of Kansas and recently received a B.S. in Recording Industry from Middle Tennessee State University.
Shantel has been involved with several organizations that help the homeless and underprivileged in Kansas and New York, including serving as Executive Director for Project Hunger and having previously served as Coordinator for the Lawrence Homeless Coalition. Many of her songs are written about her experiences while working with these organizations.
In addition to her music, Shantel also has her own line of designer jewelry called Shantel Nicolé, and she was 1st Runner-up in the 1998 Miss Kansas pageant.
