Smythe and Taylor (TC Smythe and Gary Taylor) met while working at an oil company in Houston. TC had just learned to play the guitar and was offered her first gig at a coffeehouse, but she didn't have enough material to fill the night. She heard that a co-worker, Gary Taylor, played guitar, so she called him to help out, and he's been answering the phone ever since.
Smythe and Taylor offer a wide variety of eclectic acoustic music, from the traditional to the contemporary, including originals, country, folk, rock, blues and bluegrass. The duo is known for their tight symbiotic harmonies, their humorous lyrics and their 3D guitar playing. They have been playing together since 2000 and have released 5 CDs. Their latest, âMaybe itâs Because Iâm Missing Youâ was released in 2005.
Gary and TC have won many individual songwriting awards, including HFBSA's âSong of the Yearâ, âSongwriter of the Yearâ, âLifetime Achievement Awardâ, the 2005 Woody Guthrie Songwriting Award, the Houston Acoustic Jammies, âBest Original Songâ and the American Songwriter Magazine Lyric competition. Most recently, the duo is nominated in 4 categories of the 2006 Academy of Texas Music Awards.
Smythe and Taylor have played in hundreds of venues, within and beyond Texas. Their 2006 world tour begins July 14th in Guilford England, at the Guildford Folk Festival.
