Details:
"The music of The Supplicants is so much more than an intricately woven framework of sounds, beats, and melodies. It is an experience. The level of emotion with which they play is so deep, so personal, and the energy so pure that it is almost as if existence, or being itself, creeps most surprisingly yet receptively into our souls."

- Drew Foxman, All About Jazz

The Supplicants' new album, Balance, embraces diverse musical traditions from around the world, while remaining rooted in the spirit of American jazz. The sounds of Chinese bowed strings, West African talking drum, and North Indian tablas draw listeners across bridges connecting several continents.

Extending beyond their debut album, 1st Encounter, The Supplicants reveal an even more refined sense of direction. Balance unveils the group's refined ability to spontaneously create compositions.

On Balance, the initial trio of David Boyce on saxophone, David Ewell on acoustic bass and Sameer Gupta on drums is joined by saxophonist Richard Howell. Howell's presence adds a powerful rhythmic and melodic dynamic, opening the textures across the album to take you from dueling soprano saxes to meditative bass clarinet mantras.

Though the album features several composed works, and a stirring rendition of Alice Coltrane's "Ptah, the El Daoud," most of the tracks were spontaneously composed in the studio shortly following their appearance at Yoshi's in March of 2002.

Since their inception in 1999, The Supplicants remain a spirited, dynamic, captivating, and refreshing addition to the Bay Area arts community. Consistently at the cutting edge of new music, The Supplicants convey a message that is always reflective of the here and now.
