Details:
Akeel Shepherd better known as âTommieâ is an upcoming artist originally from Miami, Florida-Akeel Shepherd was born in Miami, Florida, but moved to Covington, Georgia at the age of 10. Tommie was born on January 29, 1993 to high school sweet hearts Nevaldo Shepherd and Julie-Ann Powell-now Mr. and Mrs. Shepherd. Julie is a part-time teacher and Nevaldo is a graphic communication specialist.
At the age of eight Tommie discovered he had a passion for drawing, always drawing pictures when he had a chance. During his elementary school years Tommie was in the back of the class just drawing whatever came to mind, he says it was a way of expressing himself back then. After school he will go straight to his art program to enhance his skills as a young artist; art seem to travel with Tommie all the way to his teens. Art wasnât the only talent Tommie hoped to master. On his ninth birthday, his dad took him to basketball try-outs for a recreational team; surprisingly making the team. Basketball became his new passion, with a dream of making it to the N.B.A. To achieve his dream Tommie stayed up late nightâs practicing, shooting hoops in his front yard. Unfortunately Tommie tried out for his middle school basketball team but didnât make it. Not making the team affected him in a huge way, but that didnât stop him. He started to go harder at basketball, playing ball in the streets around his neighborhood with the older guys to get better.
Attending Newton High School he tried out for the basketball team and made it, not only did he make the team he skipped the ninth grade team and went to the Junior Varsity. People didnât agree with the coachesâ decision on making him a JV player, but as long as he had the support from his family and friends he could care less what the others had to say. Outside of school he played for an AAU team âThe Atlanta Aftershockâ owned and coached by former N.B.A player Dwayne Farrell, to keep his skills sharpened. During his sophomore year, he was also on the JV team but this time he was starting as 1st string shooting guard. However throughout the season, he began to realize that basketball wasnât his true love and passion. When the season was over he turned towards his talent of writing poetry.
Writing poetry later became writing songs and making music and at the age of 16 Tommie began the recording phase. A year later Tommie found his first true love, but they ended the relationship when she got pregnant by another guy. This moment in his life was a hurtful one. He stopped making music and completely gave up on life, but as the time grew and summer came around Tommie turn back to his music. âDear Fionaâ, was his first comeback song where he expresses how he truly felt about everything. The feedback from the song could not be anything but amazing, the downloads reached 700 the first day.
On August 6, 2010, his mixtape âConcrete Thoughtsâ, had 1500 downloads in the first week. After realizing he had a talent to spit lyrics and maybe become successful he started to do showcases around Georgia for others to recognize him. Tommie showed his fellow students at Newton High just exactly what he could do. He signed up for the talent show at school and won. Not only did he win the talents show, Tommie was asked to make the schools basketball team anthem song, itâs played at every home game and the kids love it. Tommie has great believers and supporters that truly believe in him.
