2004 has been a good year for The Tallboys. So far this year has seen them bring their unique high energy fiddle and dance Old Time sound to Seattle's prestigious Northwest Folklife festival, take first place at the Northwest String Summit band contest, and release their first album, entitled Hang it on Your Door.

The Tallboys were first brought together by their shared love of Old Time and early Bluegrass music. Feeling the draw from the deepest depths of Southern Fiddle style and Mountain songs they aspire to explore this American tradition and bring it to the ears of today's listeners ever hungry for the sounds of Old Time music. Their repertoire includes many old fiddle tunes and songs that were first sung and played 80, 100, or even 200 years ago but still ring true today with that illusive, alluring sound now becoming known as Americana.

Not to be overlooked are The Tallboys original songs. Chief songwriter and banjo player Charlie Beck has contributed numerous songs of his own to The Tallboys' set lists. His artfully crafted original songs come alive within the Old Time and Bluegrass tradition. Also contributing strong fiddle tunes of his own creation is mandolin player Paul McGowan. His melody lines meld seamlessly with the fiddle and his rhythmic "chop" gives The Tallboys their backbeat. Central to the band's sound is Joe Fulton on the fiddle. His part mournful, part joyful wail is the lead voice in the instrumental lineup. Rob Adesso and John Hurd on guitar and bass, respectively, are the hard driving rhythm section of The Tallboys. Adesso fills out the sound with his guitar in the Old Time style and flat-picks with a fury in the Bluegrass style, while Hurd lays down the unshakeable foundation of the band with his rhythmic pulse.

The Tallboys first album, put out in 2004, features both original and traditional songs making the old sound new and the new sound old. It's title, "Hang it on your Door," takes its name from one of the original tracks written by Beck. Other Tallboys originals on the album include "Norm in the Morning" by McGowan and "Don't Know What to do with Myself" by Beck.

The Tallboys momentum is building. They are currently working on their second album and looking forward to playing other festivals in 2004. Keep your ears open for the youngest Old Time music in the Northwest.
