Because of how deeply I (Micah) believe in my music and the lyrics/their importance to the perception of our songs, I tend to go on and on about it. I encourage you to read one of my more recent rants:

"...I donât want these to just be seen as 'songs.' My entire life has revolved around, been a part of, been lived through the writing of these songs. Each one represents so much of myself, the changes Iâve gone through, etc. Some of the songs even show the change within the same song because I wrote part of it and then left it...but then it came together with some other mindframe/rhyme scheme much time later. Over the past five years, I have literally grown up with these songs either guiding the way or documenting the path as I lived each step along the writing process. From naively thinking that I was 'in love' to finally finding meaning for myself (and then finding out more)â¦every word matters, every note counts.

It didnât matter what I was preoccupied with, when something came, I wrote it down. So I have 4 notebooks full of scribbles or verses or terribly transcribed and composed melodies with instrumentation lists. And when something clicks from 5 years ago to something I jotted down 2 years ago to a melody I just came up with a month ago that I recorded on my phone, it is truly a beautiful, serendipitous thing.

These are my babies. I never forced them to grow up too quickly, otherwise theyâd be pooping their pants before they're properly potty-trained. But oftentimes when they needed the kick out of the nest to get em to fly, there I was showing the way out (please forgive the terrible bird analogies). There seems to be a necessary developmental path for each songâs writing process, although each one was different: different lengths of time spent âwriting,â different pieces that fit together at separate times, different people or events in my life that affected the outcome as opposed to the original idea (like when Justin came along and we came up with "I'll Admit." I never rushed anything, but when the moment came to put things together, it felt like I wasnât the only person writing it. The words transcended just my personal opinions, and my experiences were finally shared with others in the world. And somehow things just came the way they were supposed to. But always, ALWAYS, no words were taken for granted; no kitschy melodies were fallen back upon. It took Justin and me over a month to make the few seemingly simple verses for "I'll Admit." because we wanted it to be tight and something we could be proud to call our own.

And I really hope our passion is evident when people listen to the songs. Not only listen, but think about, ponder, live with, discuss, enjoy these songs. There have been so many songs or albums that have defined eras, years, days, or moments in every single personâs life. This single is like my thesis statement. Iâve been gathering data for years and years, slowly piecing together drafts while so many of my peers have chosen other routes. Each of my songs is an event. They represent moments in my life of triumph, sadness, contentment, contempt, true happiness, confused sadness or full progressions of those moments. No, they donât represent moments, they ARE the moments and progressions.

Itâs been said that you can and should learn from other peopleâs mistakes. But you canât just read the story book of life and expect to be wise beyond your years. Thereâs going to be fire in everyoneâs lives; but if they canât live through those tough times or feel the joy and love of the happy times, they are unable to truly live. Iâve made too many mistakes in my lifeâ¦but sometimes rolling the die and having to go back 3 spaces is exactly what you need to put your foot in the right place next time."

To us, the lyrics say this: âIâm sick of this being the end of good times and Iâm sick of watching all my once best friends spiraling down into a comfortable zone that theyâll never break out from. I want more out of my lifeâ¦and there are so many years left to live. Itâs ridiculous to think that my best days are over, because there is so much more out there to experienceâ¦Iâd rather not waste my time drinking and getting high in my basement with my best friends.â Self-actualization
