Details:
WHITE SHABBOS began in Spring, 2004 as a studio project in the Long Island home of guitarist/trombonist/vocalist MENASHE YAAKOV. Still in his 20s but already a veteran of the music industry, MENASHE had spend the last decade touring the world with the likes of KING CHANGO, ANTIBALAS AFROBEAT ORCHESTRA and THE EASY STAR ALL STARS. Newly reconnected with his Jewish roots, MENASHE YAAKOV wanted to try his hand at a Jewish answer to Irish punk bands like DROPKICK MURPHYS and FLOGGING MOLLY. Enter mandolinist/vocalist JOSHUA ALPERT, whose love for bluegrass and country music perfectly complemented MENASHEâs melodic punk leanings. In a strange but organic songwriting collaboration, MENASHE began âchannelingâ JOSHâs vibes into upbeat songs about Shabbos, the Moshiach and Hashemâs praise. Calling themselves WHITE SHABBOS (a tribute to the legendary BLACK SABBATH), the group began recording tracks with multi-instrumentalist DENNIS DONAGHY. Before long, enough material had been collected for a debut album, titled âShabbos Holy Shabbosâ.
Despite an almost complete lack of promotion or distribution, copies of âShabbos Holy Shabbosâ have found their way into peopleâs hands. Several people have declared that it was their favorite album of the year, including Leslie Bunder of the popular dailyjews.com. WHITE SHABBOS was the winner of an informal âbattle of the bandsâ on the UK radio show, âSomething Jewishâ. The music seems to speak to every age demographic, from little kids to AARP members and everyone in between.
WHITE SHABBOS has brought its dynamic live show to Jewish music venues across the NYC/Long Island area, as well as mainstream clubs like CBGB. In late 2005, the band began promoting its own concerts at the Millinery Centre Synagogue in Manhattan, creating something of a âsceneâ with other alt-Jewish acts like Y-LOVE, YERACHMIEL and BLANKET STATEMENTSTEIN. The current WHITE SHABBOS lineup includes fellow Long Islanders MITCHELL HARRISON on bass and PAUL ALPERT on drums, with occasional help from violinist/mandolinist NOAM.
WHITE SHABBOS is in production for its second record, to be titled âRedemption Songsâ.
