âIâm an artist, right, so I just listen to the beat - I feel how it makes me feel. I close my eyes, visualize what displays, and I go from there,â explains the Tulsa, OK native who relocated to L.A. three years ago. Initially a protégé of rap maverick Johnny Polygon, Miss Phraze quickly began genre hopping. First appearing on the first full-length artist album of legendary house DJ Bad Boy Bill, she has since embarked on an epic journey from electro-rock to dub-step. Johanna Phraze is ready to start dropping tracks!

âI started out as old school hip-hop style, but now itâs like super-sonic, turbo-electro,â Johanna, a songwriter since age 3, continues. Her lyrics veer from dirty to deep and back again. âIt depends on the beat â I talk a lot about sex; I talk a lot about partying; about dealing with death; addiction, technology.â

This creative dichotomy is reflected her music's split-personality sound and titles. âItâs split between heavy stuff - almost metal/rock tracks and some heavy bass tracks ... And then the traditional, tell you like it is, strait hip-hop. And who wants to leave out the super-happy eletro/house club tracks... Not me!â

Indeed for Johanna, a veteran of theatre and poetry slams, the stage is where itâs at. âI love looking into peopleâs eyes and taking them on an adventure, yâknow? I feel like I give a lot of females a sense of empowerment - like they can do whatever they want to do. Iâm like... I like rapping; I donât care what you think â whatever.â
