I was watching my local TV news, and on this particular night they were showing the coming-home welcome being offered to returning soldiers from the front lines of Afghanistan and Iraq, and those from other service posts around the world. On this occasion, the program also showed similar coming-home celebrations in allied countries, as their servicemen and women came home from the war.
I was particularly moved by the joy of one girl, who had waited for her man for almost two years. She said she never wanted to let him go. She said she could still hear his footsteps in the house, and his voice, even though he was gone for so long. And that's how I thought about writing this song.
Here are the lyrics:
Coming Home
If youâre asking whoâs at the door
Maybe itâs someone whoâs been there before,
Someone that you knew
Long ago,
Someone whose footsteps
Still echo in the hall,
Someone whose voice
Youâre still hearing call,
Someone whose heart
Once you held so dear,
Someone whose love
You always kept so near,
And now you fear you have lost;
He was once the man
Who filled your heart with joy,
And always put a smile
On your face,
He was always there
And never left your side,
So why, Oh why,
Did you let him go,
Now thereâs a silence, strangely it seems
Something so familiar it almost disappears,
And you wonder if it is,
Or could it really be,
Someone whose footsteps
Still echo in the hall,
Someone whose voice
Youâre still hearing call,
Someone whose heart
Once you held so dear,
Someone whose love
You always kept so near,
And now you wonder if heâs here;
You rush to the door
Hoping that itâs true
Wondering what he will say
And what you will do,
You swing open the that door
And there in the sun
Stands your man,
Heâs come back â come back home;
You rush to the door
Hoping that itâs true
Wondering what he will say
And what you will do,
You swing open the that door
And there in the sun
Stands your man,
Heâs come back â home from the war;
