The MX-3 was a two engine options - 1.6 L-R4 and 1.8 L V6. The engine was in two versions, a 66 kW (88hp) SOHC B6-ME unit the 1992 and 1993 models or a 79kW powered found (106hp) DOHC/16-valve B6-D unit of 1994 and later models. The more powerful DOHC 24-valve V6 K8-DE produced 101kW (135hp) and was available with an optional automatic. There have been many cases of GS owners upgrade of the module to a 2.5 L V6 (either a North American spec-125kW (168hp) KL03 (most commonly in 2nd generation Ford Probe GT or the Mazda MX6 found) or the Japanese-spec (199hp) KLZE 150kW found in these vehicles as the Efini MS 8Xedos 9 & Eunos 800). Upgrade to this engine size added the unofficial GSR trim of the MX-3. The 4-cylinder RS could be modified to fit the BP, B6T, or BP-T-engine. Either this engine changes were the additional performance comparable with many modern sports car, a popular extension on MX-3 fans.

The V6 engine was impressive for the time, belong to the Mazda K-series, which were used in a number of Mazda vehicles. These engines have been developed are smooth and very durable, and keep a high torque of the speed range. A variable-length intake manifold (VLIM) used these engines enable an optimal torque for recording to resonance. Mazda MX-3 calls for "variable resonance induction system" (VRIS) your system. This engine had a 7000 rpm redline, and a 7800 RPM fuel pump cut-off. It is rumored, the Porsche designers helped to create K series engine.

MX-3 changes
The Mazda MX-3 is a rare car, too, so that changes to it can be difficult to find, if you know where you are looking for because it produced not in the United States since 1996. Since the MX-3 has two engine classes (i4 and v6) many are the engine performance changes depending on what platform is installed.
