Down til the End With Upstart
Upstart is what happens when a soul-man from New Mexico, artist punk from Utah, jazz-jock from Iowa, and conservatory snob from Nebraska are thrown together for a summer. Residing in southern California now, Upstart actually grew out of a friendship formed when these perfect strangers found themselves working together at a Michigan dinner theater in 1999. After playing over 180 shows and many late night jams, the foursome developed a deep understanding of each others' playing, laying a solid musical and personal foundation for the future.
Upstart was officially launched in 2002 on the heals of a gig at Fullerton's famed "Steamers" jazz club where the quartet mixed jazz with funk and soul to the raves of a standing room only crowd. As they continued writing music that year, Upstart's sound grew increasingly ambitious. Saxophonist Josh Bachman of London, England joined the group as rock and hip hop with songwriterconsciousness started creeping into the bands jazz pocket to form a sound that struggles for comparison. The Orange County Music Awards recognized Upstart's improvising abilities with a nomination for "Best Jazz" at the 2003 awards show. For the sake of labels, though, Upstart plays "jazzrockfunkhiphopsouljammusic". Get all that?
Trumpet man and singer Michael Cartwright is an entertainer from an age gone-bye, combining the talents of trumpeter Freddie Hubbard with the legendary vocals of Marvin Gaye. All the while, piano/keyboard man Jarod Sheahan attacks with Ben Folds ferocity as the multi-tattooed Sam Eames jumps effortlessly from electric to upright bass. Josh Bachman, the english John Coltrane, plays with intense originality and drummer Tony Hundtoft handles Upstart's challenging twists and turns with ease... and they all sing too!
An Upstart live show gives even greater witness to the band's camaraderie, as each member takes a turn leading amidst strong ensemble playing that emphasizes intelligent improvising and tight vocal harmonies within well-crafted songs. They gracefully "flow" through various styles in a natural fusion that represents five individuals coming together in a common love of music. The songs can be fun or introspective, but thus is life. And therein lies the essence of Upstart.
