JJ and son, Mark OâConnor, began taking guitar lessons in the mid 80âs when Mark was in high school and JJ was a high school history teacher. While Mark pursued music as guitarist and vocalist in various rock bands during and after college, JJ continued playing acoustic guitar and composing quirky songs at home. When JJ retired from teaching in 2003, fatherâs and sonâs musical interests converged. Mark, who is a carpenter by trade, created a sound studio in his basement, and they began playing together as a ânon-bandâ, making their initial EP âLeninâs Headâ in the summer of 2003. As a duo, they have continued writing and producing original songs (a mix of alternative pop and folk rock), evolving finally into a âreal bandâ Universe Narrows. They have recently released their first full length self-titled cd, and are preparing to support it with live shows in 2006, expanding the studio duo to a band of five.
