Sergi Rachmaninoff: wrote two sets of Etudes-Tableaux. Some of his most creative writing is found in these studies. The Etude-Tableau in E-flat major is one of the most well known etudes in the Op. 39 set.

Maurice Ravel: based his Gaspard de la nuit on three poems by Aloyslus Bertrand. Notoriously difficult and wonderfully atmospheric, these pieces reflect Ravel's compositional artestry. Ondine refers to the water spirit that tries to lure a mortal man to her underwater world. A B-flat note repeats throughout Le gibet, signifying the tolling bell for a man hanging on the gallows. Scarbo is the name of a dwardf who terrorizes the poet in the middle of the night.

Domenico Scarlatti: wrote over 550 of these keyboard sonatas for the Portugese Princess Maria Barbara. Like the two on this Eroica recording, they are mostly short and in binary form.

Ludwig van Beethoven: One of Beethoven's smaller sonatas, Op. 78 only has two movements. It was written in 1809 following a somewhat lengthy break in his sonata writing for piano. Here, pianist David Viscoli presents the beautifully lyrical first movement from the sonata. It begins with a short, slow introduction.

Bela Bartok: wrote this sonata for his own concert tours. It is a great tour de force for the pianist. Bartok's writing is often infused with the melodies and rhythms of Hungarian and Romanian folk music. This is obviousin the sonata as well, which is Bartok's longest work for solo piano

Gabriel Faure: Often unduly neglected on recital programs, Faure's Theme and Variations Op. 73 is a subtle yet effective work tht Gaure composed in 1897. It is filled with Faure's surprising harmonic twists and turns and it shows his graceful compositional style.
