V. I. P. (Virgin Island Professa)
VIP started his musical journey at the age of nine. "I wanted to join the choir, but I was too young. I would practice everyday. I finally made the choir in the fourth grade. VIP discovered his ability to write songs soon after making the choir. "I was told by my choir director that I had the ability to add a beautiful human presence to music with my words." VIP grew up listening and idolizing artists like Bob Marley, Beenie Man and Jam Band. "I always admired them because of the way they could put such meaning to their words and move audiences in such different ways."
VIP's sound is best described as a "world sound." He takes the best of multiple styles of music and merges it with vibes from the Caribbean. "I love mixing styles. It keeps my writing fresh. I have a song called 'Which Woman' that is a straight R&B song. Then I have a song called 'After Party' which takes African drums mixed with a Caribbean baseline and a slightly dated west coast string. When it's put all together it's great for the club." VIP's songs have been tested in North Carolina, Texas and Maryland. DJ Rob from a club in Maryland said, "I slipped his song 'Dance' in with the rest of my mix and the people didn't stop dancing. I even got request for it. Now I keep it in my repertoire when I do clubs. He's a great artist. He'll go far."
VIP has won several talent contests and collected numerous prizes. His most notable wins have come in The Uplifting Minds national talent competitions and seminars. VIP has won the Grand Prize in both the songwriting and performance competitions. His first victory was in the performance category where he literally had everyone dancing. "My strength I think is my performance. I am so comfortable in front of a live audience. If I could live my life performing I would die a very happy man. There's a feeling that can't be described when I see people smiling and dancing while I perform. It's true heaven." In a later competition VIP also won in the songwriting category. "Being recognized for my song writing was very exciting for me."
VIP has finished and 11 song CD titled AMBASSADOR. "I'm going to be the first Caribbean artist with a hit song on 4 different charts in different genre's of music. If I could have it my way I'd just want to make people dance and feel good everyday. My CD is a mix of different styles. Some make you dance, some make you think and one of my favorites, 'Paradise,' is just one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard."
