NeonCity Review
Neville Lloyd- Neon City
CD Review with Anthony Turner
The Weekly Star (N.A.)
March 14-20, 2002

Renowned guitarist Neville Lloyd, best known for his famous band, Shubert &
The Miracles hopes to make his mark with his long-awaited solo debut "Neon
City" that blends adult contemporary jazz and R&B with musical influences,
ranging from classical to hip-hop. Artists featured on the compilation
include alto saxophonist Bruce Williams, tenor saxophonist Bob Culsak,
Freddie Hendrix on trumpet, and rapper Nathan Gaskin, Dave Tarzain tenor
saxophone and Greg Castano on drums.

Neville first garnered attention as the lead guitarist for the popluar
Jamaican North coast band, Llans Thelwell & The Celestials, of Montego Bay.
He performed on the band's release, "Llans Thelwell Plays It All," (1964),
and in the North Coast's most popular clubs, including the Sombrero and the
Glass Bucket, and at the University of the West Indies. The band was also
featured on Jamaican Bandstand.

Once you warm to Lloyd's accent you will appreciate his voice, which roars
from the first track until the end. What I loved most is the compelling R&B
rhythm that hits you on each track. Neville has obviously bridged the gap
between raw R&B and sophisticated new music with talented musicians,
dazzling arrangements, and solid songwriting that offers a taste of how
"Jazz" inspired R&B should sound.

The first three songs "Neoncity," "I Can't Stop Loving You" and "Linda" with
their sophisticated sound sets the album's mood. The laid back "Mercy, Mercy
It Ain't Easy" has a wicked hook and Lloyd is near flawless in his execution
here.

"Breezeway" has a palatable sound while "Don't Stop" and "Cure" round off
the 10-track disc.
