XTC-like song craft alongside angular â70s-Crimson-like instrumentals. A sort of âOranges & Lemons in Aspic.â
16 MP3 Songs
ROCK: Modern Rock, POP: Beatles-pop
Details:
Kazumi Umeda, a.k.a. New Providence, takes DIY to a new level with FUNERAL BAKED MUSIC, his first CD in nine years. Not only is it recorded, mixed and burned at home with him singing and playing all the parts, the cover art for every single copy of this CD is personally hand-painted by Kazumi, making each a unique artifact.
The record starts with a sort of overture that utilizes material from every other song on the CD. What follows is a journey that takes us from Lennon-like introspection (âThe Passers-byâ) to furious progressive rock with a Scriabin-esque piano interlude (âMossâ), hypnotically droning soundscapes (âLightfeatherâ) to energetic power pop (âAn Ordinary Songâ), and many points in between. Some of the songs use sounds captured on a small tape recorder by Kazumi during travels through Japan, including a sample of his father singing an old Japanese bean vendorsâ song in âThe Natto Song.â
âThe Japanese Andy Partridge.â -- Bob Green a.k.a. Grassy Knoll
Other New Providence titles available through CD Baby:
NEAR SUMMIT (1997; âPart folky, part new-wavey experimental pop geniusâ â Elysium Magazine)
NEW PROVIDENCE (1995; "Eclectic and enticingly atmospheric pop." â Cake Magazine #44)
