Details:
From its very conception, Necromis has been a whirlwind of sonic diversity and
mayhem. Blending styles of new and old musical forms, the band took a small chunk of the
metal music scene in the Twin Cities and turned it into a monster. With earth-shattering speed
and mind numbing, thunderous grooves mixed into one, Necromis was on the way to becoming
the kind of legendary band that comes around but once in a lifetime. Waves of musical magic
poured out upon the crowds everywhere they went. Not a soul was left untouched by the power
that emitted from the stage. And thus, an enormous fan base was created that swept over the tri-
state area like a plague.
It all started in a little Minnesota town named Hugo. The founding three members Greg
Chilton, Aaron Davis, and Jason Notebaart were at a party in a local park. Across the street from
the park was the local cemetery. While having consumed more than their fair share of fine malt
beverages, they wandered into the tombstone littered plot of land. They needed to come up with
a good name for the band they had thought about working on, and it wasn't coming to them. So,
with a bit of luck, divine inspiration came about. Necromis was the name that stood out more
than any other. The concept of "The god of the dead" that plotted to overthrow hell and spread
the world with zombies to take over everything in his path seemed rather enticing. Given the
three were, and still are, giant horror genre film buffs, they went with it due to the possibilities
that existed to display the kind of sick and twisted visuals that needed to be included via
advertising, clothing and whatever else that could be "zombified".
After the first step, things started to pick up speed. The "snow ball effect" landed the
boys two prizes that would end up being crucial to the foundation that was built. The blistering
drumming of Tony Olson and the divine melodies of Dan Lerach . Fortunately for Necromis,
these two priceless pieces of the puzzle became available and the nefarious five man-wrecking
machine was about to turn on the ignition.
At a torrid pace, the boys sawed through show after show after show. Playing with such
acts as Megadeth, Rigor Mortis, Cannibal Corpse, Grave, Unleashed, Carcass, Fleshgrind,
Malevolent Creation, just to name a few. The years that followed that fateful evening in Hugo
were a blur and a wonder to behold. The local scene was flourishing at the time as well with such
acts as Cryogen, Cromlech and Horror. It was a great time to be an underground metal fan in the
Twin Cities. The boys also took the show on the road, playing metal hotbeds like Milwaukee at
the Metal Fest and The Rave. As well as Chicago at local bars and The Iowa Fair Grounds
playing to an enormous crowd of metal heads. Locally they thrived at First Avenue in downtown
Minneapolis. Playing The Seventh Street Entry, and other various clubs, were usual gigs to the
boys and the fans couldn't get enough.
Necromis had arrived and everyone in the area took notice. The fabulous run that the
boys had put together ran from 1991 through 1996 and included two demo tapes that were
released in 91' and 92' respectively. Some shuffling of guitar players had taken place during this
time as well. And that, ultimately, was the downfall of the band. The band dispersed in 1996.
For those precious years that Necromis was together, the local scene was alive with
energy and many people were affected by the influence that Necromis exerted. It was a
monumental time for the entire band, and all of the Twin Cities and surrounding areas for that
matter. But all good things come to an end .........or so they thought.
Through the down years (The Dark Ages I like to call it, when Necromis did not exist) the
bands members were busy playing with various other bands and projects that never really
panned out or never had the fury and power that Necromis had. The boys kept in touch and
dreamed of a day when the circumstances were right to get the band back together. Well friends,
that day came one dark, snowy evening in the winter of 2003. Just north of the Twin Cities,
under the full January moon, the five original members of the ruthless, driving force known as
Necromis came together again. From the north, a rumbling could be heard far and wide; the
rumbling of a sleeping giant; of a waking demon. It was the sonic mayhem that Necromis
delivered so very long ago. Greg Chilton, Aaron Davis, Jay Notebaart, Tony Olson, and Dan
Lerach were ready to unleash the fury once again.
Putting their collective nose to the grindstone, the five practiced the old and created the
new at a feverish pace. The main core of Necromis' arsenal consists of epic songs drawing from
a wide array of diverse influences. Some songs start off frantic and slow down gradually, only to
bring the power back full throttle at the conclusion. Some begin with a slow plodding punishment
and intertwine the brutality throughout. Necromis is a unique brand of genre crossing music. It is
at its core a metal feel, but with a very groove orientated feel in sound and structure. The rhythm
guitar is a special blend of sonically addictive grooves and hyper speed grinds. The lead guitar is
a symphony of chaotic melodies and contemporary harmonies that burst into free flowing guitar
solos. The vocals are a catchy but sinister concoction of angst and raw emotion. The drums are
a mesh of flawless, technical execution with lightening-fast double bass contrasted with an
almost melodic approach and sensibility. Hiding in the shadows lurks the thunderous low end of
the bass that makes up the brutal, final component of Necromis' sonic assault. Together, these
waves of sound sweep through the audience affecting everybody in its path, leaving awe and
amazement in its wake.
Six weeks after that fateful day in January, the proud men were ready to show the world,
once again, that there is none higher, nor any more powerful on this earth, than The God of the
Dead, Necromis. They began anew, playing with Malevolent Creation at The 4th Street Station in
downtown St. Paul. Which was shortly followed by several shows throughout Minneapolis. And
now, my friends, we've come to this point. Necromis is back on the scene and looking to never
stop. The five have made a pact and the door will never shut again on this prolific band. Word is
spreading as I type this very sentence. Come see the wicked show. Necromis will leave you
speechless.
