Charles A. Ray

Charles Ray began his musical career at the age of four learning the Bb clarinet. Though the instrument was too big for his fingers, it did not deter him he rented an Eb clarinet until his fingers grew over the holes. At seven he wrote his first composition which, though simple in style and tonality, eventually became the theme song for the soap opera The Young and the Restless. The first public performance of one of his compositions was in high school where he conducted The Divine Promise with his school concert band. He attended Pensacola Junior College where another of his compositions, Fanfare and Offering, was publicly performed for the first time in the collegeâs history. His Festival 75 was written expressly for the 75th anniversary of the University of Redlands where he studied composition and performance under other renowned composers such as Dr. Barney Childs, Dr. Wayne Bornstedt, and film composer Jerry Goldsmith. He performed with the late Victor Borge, and the Redlands Symphony Orchestra where he was personal assistant to Maestro Jon Robertson. He earned his masters degree at the University of Florida where he began his research in music therapy, and wrote a treatise on Three Dimensional Music Communications. He was invited to lecture and tour in the USSR and Poland on his research, and he also toured in Greece and Israel.

Charlesâ most recent composition, We Are Here, was written in memoriam for the parents of deceased children, part of a collection of works in his Book of Songs On Recalling Loss. He is also working on revisions of his two symphonies, is composing a string orchestra piece in the style of Wagner also as a memorial and is active in performances for fundraisers, luncheons, and special events.
