Background

Nancy Lamka's music was born from adversity, and has taken her through many highs and lows in her lifetime. It is partly because of the tremendous place music has had in her life, both positive and negative, that she is able to play with the feeling and emotion portrayed in her first full length piano album, 'more than mauve'.

When she was about 2 years old, doctors made a decision to start her in music as a means of overcoming various illnesses (including polio) and disabilities. Her first song, at the age of 2 ½, was the Christmas Carol "Silent Night".

From that simple melody she began to advance quickly, and her natural abilities led to her being entered in many competitions, which she consistently won. However, not being a particularly competitive person, being forced by others into competitions led to a strong dislike for the piano. As a result, once out of college she refused to go near the instrument, even to play casually.

After about 12 years though, at the insistence of her husband, she agreed to play for an event, and over the course of the next 3 weeks began to get back into "competition" form by practicing 6 hours a day - as she would put it, 6 "miserable" hours a day. She still had not found a desire to play, and was completely resistant to the idea.

With many friends praying that she would grow to once again love music as she had when she was a child, however, she persisted, and the result is proof that God answers prayer - from that time onward music became a journey which has brought incredible joy to her life (and all who have heard it!), as it has become a sort of 'spiritual language' with which she is able to communicate.

Purpose

Nancy's desire is for her music to touch people's lives as it has impacted hers, and ultimately that it would give listeners a sense of light in the darkness, a real sense of hope. Over the years many people, especially family and friends who have been impacted by her music, have encouraged her to record and let the world hear the incredible sounds that she creates. 'more than mauve' is the first album in a line of what will likely be many, and it is Nancy's desire that it bring a sense of peace and comfort to those who hear it.

Many people have commented on the music at her live performances with such descriptions as "beautiful", "soothing", "peaceful", "relaxing", and many combinations of those words! One woman has stated that she likes to listen to the CD while driving home from work, as a way to "detox" from the hectic day.

Because Nancy writes from a background filled with a variety of influences, including classical, jazz, mood music, easy listening, impressionism, and even contemporary, her style becomes all her own. The music is a sensory experience, like the reflecting of light through a prism of colors and hues, wrapped up in fully human emotions which span the spectrum from gentle, quiet meditation to intense passion.
