These are 12 Surah's from the NJ Dawood translation (used by Penguin Classics)of the Holy Qu'ran. They are presented simply, read with American inflections (including New Yorker style) with little musical transitions between readings.

According to Muslim theologians the "True" Qu'ran is untranslateable from the original Arabic. That being said, of the existing translations into english most Muslim scholars prefer the Yusef Ali translation and even the traditional Rodwell version as opposed to the Dawood translation. That being said . . .

This is the American Koran. It's a beautiful, poetic translation which is, for all intents and purposes, true to the text in Arabic. But since it doesn't seem to hold water with the scholars then these chapters have been selected in particular to give a total novice an adequate intro to the theme of this book. Also for the Muslim believer, here is a beautiful and powerful rendering that could only enhance their current belief.
