NARAMINE
Toby Hollowell and Jon Cox grew up in Kennington south London,
They attended all the same schools and have known each other for over 20 years.
Early musical influences came from the old house and garage raves. This led to many hours spent making Lo Fi dance tunes on a friendâs computer.
Jon started playing guitar after seeing an early oasis gig...Noel held up his guitar at the end and
told the audience to go and buy a guitar because "there're fucking great".
So he did.....
Jon played briefly in one of Toby's brothers old bands without much success, this band experience put him off of the guitar until a few years later when Toby and Jon shared a flat in Pimlico.
Jon bought a new guitar and never really stopped playing from then on.
He began to record some early stuff and began to sing for the first time. He played it to Toby and he liked it. So they just kept developing and working on the ideas. Toby started playing the bass and soon after a close friend became interested in helping them out after hearing an early demo CD they burned. This gave them the opportunity to get some much needed new equipment and some studio time.
So itâs been three, hard, but enjoyable years to get to a point where they could record their album.
The title is from an Audrey Hepburn and Peter O'Toole movie "How to steal a million"
The album was recorded at the Twin peaks studio in Wales, made infamous by The Babyshambles and Pete Doherty.
âAlbums are Strange things.... they are like a snapshot of you at a moment in time so its can be a difficult and trying process. Trying to nail down music that is constantly changing can be a tough job.
"How to steal a million" is really about trying. Doing something different, removing yourself from your comfort zone and taking risks to get to where you really want to be.
I think we can spend too much time talking about what to do, rather than just doing something you believe in and facing the consequences.
We want people to get whatever they want from our music. We do it because we are addicted, thereâs nothing else like it. 2006 for us is about playing live and finishing the next album
I am currently fifty percent through with plans to record in early 2007.â
