This L.A. lady has the look and vibe to be the new multi-culti pussycat of the smooth groove lounge set. Her music has that dreamy sheen of acoustic guitars and percussion dipped in spacey synths, gurgling electric guitars and fondue deep bass. Her lyrics and voice drip with the sensual evocative ache of one who worships at the altar of Sade. And like so many other singers (female and male) have endeavored to keep that icon´s space warm during her long absences – like dutiful self-appointed disciples – Nyee ratchets up the steam for a string of aural fever dreams…pleasing but destined to evaporate into thin air (thank God there´s no plaintive saxophone to be found on the disc). My favorite of these songs is "Vanilla," an irresistible treat about a delicious discovery of indiscretion. But in the middle of the CD, suddenly Nyee switches up and sings of a culture robbed on "Acacia Tree," a song of hope titled "Under the Sun" and the spiritual "The Journey" (featuring Ali Kamiya dit Ba). And her bonus track, a rethinking of Gershwin´s "Summerime," features both rapper Krayzie Bone and flute guru Hubert Laws – a bold mash up that actually works. Okay, you can let this kitty kat in…anytime!
