Three small town Iowa boys have come a long way from strumming tennis rackets and banging on ice cream buckets. Sean Wilson, Pat Curtis, and Dan Ketelsen make up the Des Moines based punk rock band North of Grand. As a youngster, Curtis dreamed of rock-n-roll glory in Williamsburg while bashing wooden spoons on Schwanâs Ice Cream containers. Ketelsen grew up in Redfield, where he frequently appeared on stage (his parentâs front porch) dressed as Ace Frehley. Wilson smashed tennis rackets in Monroe, imitating the antics of Pete Townsend. Today, the trio is together in Iowaâs state capitol and have released their third CD full of raise your fist in the air rock.
North of Grandâs latest and greatest independent release is the 7-song EP Cut You Down. The tracks were recorded and mixed over a four day period at Black Lodge Studios in Eudora, KS with producer Nick Day. Black Lodge has released some the most powerful rock albums in the last decade from the likes of Motion City Soundtrack, The Get Up Kids, Ultimate Fakebook, Paw, and Reggie and the Full Effect. NOGâs Cut You Down is no exception. It features the bandâs most stunning material to date and includes a blistering cover of The Groovie Ghouliesâ classic âCarly Simon.â Cut You Down is the closest reproduction yet of NOGâs tight, loud, energetic live show.
North of Grand formed in March 2003. The original and current line-up is Sean Wilson (vocals, guitar), Dan Ketelsen (bass), and Pat Curtis (drums, backing vocals).
The name "North of Grand" comes from the area in Des Moines where the band frequents bars that line Ingersoll Avenue (just north of Grand Avenue). It's a blue-collar, no nonsense neighborhood that is reflected in the band's straight-up, no apologies style of rock n roll.
