Details:
Thanks for your interest in purchasing Neil Shilanskyâs CD titled Something I Know. After years and years playing gigs as a sideman for various groups and projects, Neil (with a little nudge from his brother Mark Shilansky) finally compiled all of his original compositions to one CD.
Neil's CD Something I know is mix of original contemporary jazz and smooth jazz compositions. The sound is unique. However, the experienced jazz ear may sense a bit of Yellowjackets or Pat Metheny in the music. That's okay, since they are my main influences.
In addition, I've included three jazz standards: Dat Dere, (dedicated to my daughter Lauren, who always wants 'Dat' over 'Dere) God Bless the Child (a song I like to play at Church), and the Love Theme from Cinema Paradiso (one of my favorite movies and Pat Metheny/Charlie Haden perform this song beautifully on a CD titled Under The Missouri Sky).
Since you are reading this bio, I'll let you in on a secret: there is an eleventh track - a hidden track on the CD titled Neil's TV Theme. This song is Neil's first foray into composing music for a TV show.
Like so many other band students, Neil began playing music in 5th grade. From 5th grade through high school, he played percussion in the school concert band. In college, Neil majored in music at the University of New Hampshire (UNH). In addition to playing band and classical percussion, he quickly developed an affinity for jazz drums. Because there were always two drummers in jazz band, he wanted to learn how to play the vibraphone while the other drummer was playing.
After years of performing on drum set and vibraphone with jazz and rock musicians, and playing shows for various local theaters, Neil attended and received his Masters in Music Education degree in 2001 at the University of Hartford Hartt School of Music.
Today, Neil is a middle school band director at East Hampton Middle School in East Hampton, Connecticut. He also is an organist at Asylum Avenue Baptist Church in Hartford, CT. Neil performs on vibraphone and drums in the Hartford, CT area, and when time permits, composes concert band and jazz band music.
