JAZZ: Latin Jazz, LATIN: Latin Jazz
Details:
The Nicki Denner Latin Jazz Trio brings the rhythmic intensity
of the Latin big band to the jazz piano trio. The result is unique,
both potent and subtle.
Featuring Nicki Denner on piano, Jennifer Vincent on bass,
Willie Martinez on drums, the trio has been performing in New York since 2001. As individual musicians they have appeared in the US and
abroad with many of the greats in jazz, pop and Latin music:
the Duke Elllington Orchestra, Betty Carter, Frank Wess, Sheila
E., Bobby Sanabria, Paquito DâRivera, Chico OâFarill, Bebel Gilberto
and others.
In June 2006, they performed at the Rochester International Jazz
Festival, where they debuted music from their new CD, Moliendo
Café, which was also released this summer.
Moliendo Café features Denner's originals as well as arrangements for piano trio of classic salsa standards such as "Indestructible", by Ray Barretto and "Juan Pachanga"' by Ruben Blades. The recording also showcases the talents of Maurice Chestnut, a world renowned tap dancer, as a guest artist on one track.
Moliendo Café is Ms. Denner's third CD as a bandleader. Her
first two CDs, Donât Just Stand There and El Médico de Coquí
(which spent six months on Latin Beat magazine's Top 20 Hit Parade)
are also available at online, at CD Baby.com.
Reviews:
"Nicki Denner's piano playing gets pretty goddamn caliente, whether she's extrapolating a Latin standard or taking listeners on jazzy jaunts into her lively originals." -Frank DeBlase, Rochester International Jazz Festival
"Editor's Pick: A totally cool piano trio record... The sound of the recording envelops you; the whole thing feels intimate. Denner herself is a super strong pianist, and her arrangements are full of rhythmic order; when sheâs improvising she brings a ton of harmony and time to her blowing. The whole thingâs a study in time, and all its shadings. Highly Recommended."
