Details:
Her debut album is called Passenger and New Zealanders have let Carlyâs music take them on one melody-filled journey. But sheâs not the kind of girl who can be taken for a ride.
Carly Binding is determined, self-assured and she sure knows how to write a pop-song or 10! Since Passenger was released in June 2003 the Platinum certified album produced 4 chart-topping singles in New Zealand.
The first track âAlright With Meâ was number 1 in the Radio Charts for 3 weeks, it was a Top 10 Hit and spent 20 weeks in the National Top 50 Singles Chart. âWe Kissedâ spent 5 weeks at number 1 on the Radio Charts, reached number 2 on the AC Chart and was Top 10 in the Pop Chart. âLove Will Save Meâ was a Number One Airplay hit as well as âThis Is Itâ.
The Australian Music Industry has already had an impressive taste of the Opera schooled singer when she played at a Melbourne Showcase, supporting Paul Kelly. In New Zealand Carly played support for Bryan Adams, Bic Runga and Ronan Keating. Her first two singles âWe Kissedâ and âAlright With Meâ made impressive in-roads into the Australian Airplay Top 50.
So letâs see what makes her tick!
âAt the age of 13 Mum didnât put any rules on me. She let me go. And I think I was less rebellious than other teenagers because of that.â
Carlyâs upbringing was full of the arts, both performing and visual. Her mother was a singer, dancer and actress. Dad, a painter, was put on a pedestal by the young Carly after the marriage split and he moved away when she was 3. âI saw Dad again when I was 10. It was so exciting. I remembered him by his paintings. Heâd left Mum a landscape heâd painted before I was born. Now that I know him I have him on a pedestal because of his ability as an artist. I have 20 of Dadâs works, I love them. Theyâre very aggressive images â machine guns, war, technology mixed with mythology. He has a genius that hopefully, one day Iâll tap into!â Her fatherâs music still resonates, too. âHe used to listen to Randy Newman, Bruce Springsteen, Simon and Garfunkel. Great song-writers.â Carlyâs childhood was transient, she attended many schools and was home schooled some of the time. Because of this, she was a loner, but it was probably this independent quality that gave her maturity beyond her years, the ability to observe and impartiality. Essential traits for a song-writer. âI reached the âage of reasonâ very young. I didnât understand other kids lack of logic! Iâd be in the school yard trying to understand why they couldnât just get along!â
Itâs obvious that Carly Binding is a thinker, but the lyrics in her music are simple.
âThe more you write songs the more specific you become. You can start off with a broad idea then simplify it. I remember hearing Neil Finn say that itâs all about melody and thatâs true.â
Carly admires the 1980âs as a great era for melody. âThat decade in British music had some of the best melody around. U2, David Bowie, The Thompson Twins, were what I listened to. All Eurythmics songs are so consistently well written.â She writes her songs using an acoustic guitar. âSongwriting is sometimes very scary. You can be sitting there with eight songs and need ten. Then wonder where the hell the other two will come from! The basis of song-writing is to keep inspired. You canât allow yourself to be a drama queen, but you have to let things effect you.â Due to her knowledge of art, Carly believes that environment has a lot to do with how music is written. âIf Iâd written this album in New York, itâd be entirely different. It depends on where you are and where youâre at as a person.â The sentiments in the first 3 singles released in New Zealand certainly show where thought meets emotion. Theyâre about relationships â the thrill of a simple kiss (We Kissed), chilling out (Alright With Me), dreaming of the future (Love Will Save Me). The songs are strongly melodic and sheâs not afraid to add to the light-heartedness by having some âba-ba-baâsâ âla-la-laâsâ and âdo-do-doâsâ!
âI evolve quite quickly. I get into a song record it then move onto the next one. Even with the way I look. I look like a completely different person from video to video!â
Carly is looking forward to adventuring outside New Zealand with her music. âIâd love to write my next album in New York. I spent some time there and L.A and loved it. Itâll be an interesting place to be a musician, I donât think you have to be J-Lo or nothing. Thereâs something in the middle. And Iâm not going to be moulded into something Iâm not.â Carly Binding is in it for the long-haul and is striving to be the best she can. âHaving a father whoâs an artist changes the way you think about fame. Itâs not enough. Iâd rather have 10 people think one of my songs is the best theyâve ever heard, than a million think âsheâs f***ing cool!â
âI donât want to be one of those enormously successful people whose career lasts only 2 years! Iâm not competitive against other people, but success is something achieved by people whoâve faced their fears, hit a brick wall and broken through.â
