An eclectic collection of modern-rock crunch, shimmering acoustic pop, and classic shuffle.
10 MP3 Songs
ROCK: Modern Rock, POP: Power Pop
Details:
The first full-length release (1999) from Chicago modern rockers Plato's Republic, Chow Mein Porn Star is an eclectic assortment of straight-ahead garage rock, beautiful acoustic pop, 70's-style blues-rock and melodic shuffle.
The band, having had a few years together to develop chemistry, delivered a solid low-tech independent release paying tribute to the songwriting of their influences (Beatles, Lizzy, Zeppelin, Santana, Costello) while performing with the urgency of contemporary aggro-popsters (Foo Fighters, Third Eye Blind, GooGoo Dolls) and the desperation of American jangle-rock (Counting Crows, Wilco, Gin Blossoms). That indefinable blend, coupled with eccentric soundbytes, clever lyrical turns, sarcasm, tongue-in-cheek historical references, and unusual hooks, made for an intelligent mix that set itself well apart from most of the contrived power-pop/alterna-pop releases that year. While every other rock act in America was emulating Green Day or Korn, Plato's Republic remained true to their influences.
Tim Quirk, frontman for New York alternative rockers Too Much Joy and managing editor of LISTEN.com, wrote that Plato's Republic play "jangle pop with a thunderous wallop..." and compared them to Toad the Wet Sprocket and Deep Blue Something.
In January 2001, Bryan Baker of GAJOOB.com wrote "the band is SOLID, having buzz-sawed its chops in bands whose styles are spread widely across the entire fan-rock spectrum. And this album is as if they've taken all that experience and honed the entire history of what's so cool and exciting about making and listening to rock music...Maybe I'm exaggerating, but, hell, that's what rock 'n' roll is all about too... and this album's got it..."
