"Plan B", an artistic contemporary smooth jazz band, consists of four of Philadelphiaâs finest musicians. The group began with Dale Harris on bass, Ray Robinson on drums and Mike Cummings on lead guitar. The trio has played together since their early teen years. They realized there was a missing element, which was a keyboardist to complete the desired sound. Through a referral they were lead to Tom Smith, the special ingredient necessary to complete the recipe for this soul flavored high energy group.
The band decided to take things more seriously when they realized their true potential of becoming successful recording artists. After many stringent rehearsals they began playing regularly in some of Philadelphiaâs quaint venues such as OâHaraâs and Charley Bâs. As their following continued to grow the opportunities to play larger venues increased as well. Most recently, "Plan B" has played recurring dates at Philadelphiaâs premier jazz club, Zanzibar Blue. Theyâve also delighted crowds while performing many summer festivals and concerts throughout the Delaware Valley and also the Liacouras Center. With each venue catering to a different type of clientele, the group has mastered the art of customizing their performance to please the most diverse audiences.
Innovative is the word best describing their style and approach to music. "Plan B" is constantly incorporating new dynamics and expressions into their songs. Whether they are performing a popular cover tune or some of their highly requested originals, each time you hear them play they leave you hungry for more. What makes them unique from other Smooth Jazz groups is their unique ability to encompass R&B, fusion, jazz and the magical elements which allows their energy to flow, ultimately embracing the spirit of each listener. When you suddenly find your head bobbing and realize that you are up on your feet dancing to their smooth grooves, youâve been captivated by "Plan B".
Their career is moving steadily on course. With their debut CD near completion, "Plan B" hopes to stretch out creating a more national following.
