Original Rock-n-Roll, with unique, spastic, and addictive vocal stylings that stir the soul.
8 MP3 Songs
BLUES: Blues Vocals, ROCK: Roots Rock
Details:
1. Canvas
90's Indie Rock to start the album off on solid
ground, while introducing the 'Pekoe' sound.
This tune, harkening of the bands 'For Squirrels',
'Gin Blossoms' and the 'The Pixies' provides subtle
drama and prepares the listener for what's next.
2. Autumn Dance
A Pop/Rock gem, Pekoe is inspired by observing the
Aurora Borealis glowing over the Autumn sky, and
the Square Dance scene in the original 'War of the Worlds'
flick. The Garage Rock tone of Alex Pekoe's guitar
solo is notable. You can definitely shake your hips
to this one, right along with the girls names
mentioned in the song. 'Wild Tina', 'Shy Donna', and Anita.
3. Ancient Smile
While ranting about the newspaper, TV, debt, misfortune,
and the fascination of things at peace, Pekoe carves
out a counterpoint to waiting for the beautiful girl
who's touched him with an Ancient Smile. Inspired in
part by a photo of an ageless Woman from India, and a
look at the world through rose colored lenses.
Don Turner provides the Baritone Sax lines with the
flavor of early Morphine. The rhythmic pounding of
floor toms by Chris Ortiz and the roar of electric
guitar sets the mood of the tune, leading up to
Pekoe's brief scat vocal at the end.
4. Medicine Man
This quirky tune provides Pekoe's jangly acoustic
guitar and signature vocals, accompanied by Don Turner
on accordion. This one gives you a taste of what you may
expect from Pekoe at an open-jam. Combine Mungo Jerry
and Harry Nilsson with Tom Waits and you have this infectious cocktail of a tune about your favorite Bartender or Penny Doctor. A pattern of inner voices we've all experienced at one point or another, and as Pekoe ponders insanity, there is an unusual sense of clarity. I'll let you fill in the blanks.
5. Pain Killer
Full volume, crank it to eleven. Chris Ortiz really
rocks out the kit on this one. Pekoe's growl is
David Yow (The Jesus Lizard) like, and the chorus
"Don't forget to take your pain killer" is similar to
a Dexter Holland (The Offspring) styled vocal to
carry you to the climax of the Punk Rock guitar solo.
If you listen close you can hear the sound of a
coo-coo-clock near the end of the solo. You'll want
to listen to this tune over and over again.
Once just isn't enough.
6. Hobo Jo
Kick back and relax for this one. Alex Pekoe writes
about being the outcast, yet Hobo Jo is admired as
he is a reflection of each and every one of us. The
guitar solos and heavy ending reminds you that a
little 'Neil Young and Crazy Horse lives within us all.
So, whether it's coffee or whiskey that greases your
gears, this Folk Rock dirge will satisfy.
7. Tendril
Mix the moods of the albums 'Rubber Soul' and U2's
'Rattle and Hum' you have this tune inspired by the
simpler times of youth and the wonder within a girls flowing hair. The waltz groove adds variety to this CD and we hear a touch of 'Dave Matthews' in the vocal styling.
8. Winds
Bon Voyage...to the winds! Move over Fred Durst.
Hereâs something new to sing along to
while driving alone in your car.
