"The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.... But it is a characteristic of wisdom not to do desperate things." - Henry David Thoreau
12 MP3 Songs
ROCK: Roots Rock, ROCK: Modern Rock
Details:
âWebb has found a strong and personal writing direction... The tunes are engaging--they demand your attention and strong lyrics hold it.â - KITCHENER-WATERLOO (ONTARIO) RECORD
Canadian singer-songwriter Pete Webb combines the lyricism of folk with the intensity of rock, in songs that evoke the grit and irony of everyday experience.
Pete Webb's third album, HUNTINGVILLE, begins with âHate This Town,â a scathing account of small-town apathy and disillusionment (not, by the way, aimed at Peteâs childhood home of Huntingville, Quebec). In âSalt of the Earth,â a harmless-yet-hapless youth finds himself in trouble with the law and subjected to a rigid criminal justice system. In a lighter vein, âAlmost Love at First Sightâ is a solo-acoustic pine to bittersweet romance, while âThat Song About an Old Man and His Teenage Brideâ is a tongue-in-cheek tribute to an aging lady-killer.
The two centerpieces of the album, âPoor Boyâ and âSong For Jenny Campbell,â have remained staples of Pete Webbâs live shows for over a decade. Each explores different shades of urban experience, from the tribulations of tenement living in âPoor Boy,â to the tragedy of domestic violence and witness complacency in âSong For Jenny Campbell.â
Backing Pete Webb on HUNTINGVILLE are some of his long-time musical collaborators, including bassist Barry Walls and drummer Trevor Teed (a student of Mellencamp/ Smashing Pumpkins drummer Kenny Aronoff), plus guest appearances from singer-songwriter Chris Brine, pedal steel guitarist Earl Filsinger, and group alumni Dave Thompson and Mark Heine.
