THE PETER NEVLAND BAND STORY
Spoken Groove. Thatâs the answer to people everywhere thirsty for a rock nâ roll revolution. The Peter Nevland Band has taken the burgeoning art form of slam poetry and made it accessible to the rock nâ roll masses in a way that would make Gil Scott Heron giddy with delight. âItâs a psycho funkedelic roller coaster ride that taps into the depths of the unknown,â says HM magazine. âAn explosion of words,â is the quotation of choice for the Dallas Morning News. Peterâs words by themselves will take you to never before discovered countries bursting with tongue in cheek humor, cultural insight, and the delight of a child. When combined with the prodigious musical and songwriting talents of guitarist Paul Finley, keyboardist, David Nevland, bassist, Jason Peavey, and drummer, Eric Allen, one ends up with a live show where absolutely anything is possible. If you still donât have a picture in your head for this new genre of music called Spoken Groove, youâll just have to experience it yourself.
Since packing out their first show at Café Mundi in July, 2001, the Peter Nevland Band has played all over the Austin music scene at Momoâs, Flamingo Cantina, the Red Eyed Fly, the Vibe, and everywhere in between. Theyâve been featured at arts festivals around the state and toured all over the Midwest and East Coast in the summers of 2003 & 2004. Theyâve produced two full-length albums, âLate Bloomerâ in 2002, and âBirth of the Spoken Grooveâ in 2003, one demo, âThe Singlesâ in 2004, and sold over 3000 units, besides spinning off the acoustic duo of Peter & Paul whoâve been touring all over the U.S. and Canada and releasing 5 full-length albums of their own since the Fall of 2002.
Of course the most interesting aspect to the Peter Nevland Band isnât so much where theyâve played, but how they discovered a completely new musical genre. Music and writing was the last thing on Peterâs mind when he came to the University of Texas in 1993 to study Mechanical Engineering. When he did start writing, what came out ended up being somewhere between a song and spoken word, not tied to a particular beat, but improvising around the rhythms that are generated by his exploding imagery and creative word choice. In fact his writing was so inventive, bands started asking him if they could play music for him while he unleashed his âDr. Seuss took a walk through the ghetto and decided to become the white, jive kingâ style. Pretty soon, he had a band of his own, had left his lucrative career as an engineer at Motorola, and launched off into wild musical adventures across an incredible spectrum of audiences. From rock hungry students to fine art lovers, inner city kids to white collar businessman, no one can get enough of the wonderful world of Spoken Groove.
