Details:
The Peter Rom Trio (Peter Rom, guitar, Raphael Preuschl, electric bass, and Jörg Mikula, drums) was founded in Vienna, 2002.The young musicians present an exciting musical concept that combines grooves and breathtaking improvisations all the same. Peter Rom´s and Raphael Preuschl´s unique compositions make up the main part of the program, telling at times simple, at times sophisticated stories in a contemporary musical language.

The Peter Rom Trio gets its distinct sound through creative utililization of voluntarily reduced possibilities of a non digital ensemble .The credits of the three musicians express a wide range of influences, from the American band "The Eye" to Dave Carpenter, from "Nouvelle Cuisine" to Wolfgang Puschnig, from "Sandy Lopicic Orkestar" to "Timna Brauer".

"The Art of Trio", however, remains the main focus of the Peter Rom Trio.

Article in JAZZZEIT (05/57) about "Says Who?!" and Peter Rom Trio:
The Peter Rom Trio brings forward the debut CD ââ¬Å¾Says Who?!â, presenting itself as a very well rehearsed band that likes to experiment. Stylistically the guitar player does not want to be pinpointed to one particular genre - the Trio combines impelling Funk-Grooves and Jazz-Improvisations with psychedelic Rock and Grunge elements to a highly energetic music that is one thing primarily - thrilling and inventive.

âI think it to be an aggressive album title that fits the music perfectlyâ is drummer Jörg Mikula´s comment on the provocative âsays who?!â flaunting from the cover of their newly released CD. To some extent it relates to reappearing purity requirements from parts of the jazz community. Peter Rom is not bound by those restrictions which is proved also by his enthusiasm for Prince and Jimi Hendrix. âThe term Jazz means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. Our record can be called Jazz, too although soundwise it is not very typical of that genre. What we have tried to do is to separate out our favourite things from different areas ...quot; Traditional Jazz to Free Jazz, Funk, Alternative Rock, Grunge and Pop Music in order to create our own way of playing.â The group´s shared appreciation of Jimi Hendrix also explains their natural way of using effect boards that are utilized by Peter Rom as well as electric bass player Raphael Preuschl. The developped sounds are no end in itself, but a way to stretch the boundaries of the instrument´s possibilities as they both affirm. âIt´s all about the musical contextâ, Preuschl remarks, âWe use effects to create certain atmospheres and energy fields but the ideas are always originated musically and on our instruments.â

âInitially we were almost an acoustic Trio, the use of effects was introduced eventuallyâ Mikula who provides a solid base for sound experiments with his groove-orientated playing, asserts, âThereby our music which is highly energetic, stays comprehensible and somehow more accessible even in the wildest momentsâ Three and a half years of concerts and rehearsals have given the three musicians plenty of opportunity to get attuned to one another and to define the function of each instrument in this particular setting. âWe have been able to build up a strong musical confidence in each other. Especially in improvisation it is important to rely on each other no matter what is going to happen.â In Peter Rom´s view this quality of ensemble playing requires some personal continuity which he had in mind for his âPower-Trioâ from the very beginning. âYou donât find that many real Bands in Jazz, many ensembles are more like projects and there are many forms of unsteady collaberations. In order to develop a unique musical identity as a group that ultimatily reflects the personalities of the members, in my opinion working with the same people for a longer period is very importantâ To make sure all this familiarity doesn´t result in routines opposing spontaneous creation the Trio´s repertoire is constantly expanded by new compositions of Bandleader Peter Rom and Raphael Preuschl.Incidentally Preuschl also leads his own quartet called âFuzz Noirâ with Peter Rom, saxophone player Wolfgang Schiftner and drummer Michael Prowaznik which also will present its debut CD in the near future.
