Eclectic collection of quirky, home grown, commercial-sounding pop/rock songs with a Fleetwood Mac/Beatlesque flavour.
11 MP3 Songs
POP: British Pop, POP: Folky Pop
Details:
Pete is a native of Newcastle-Upon Tyne in the North East of England a town best known in a musical sense probably for being the birthplace of 'Sting' (Pete attended the same school as the music star) and the hometown of 1960's band 'The Animals'.
In the 1980's Pete, despite being primarily a guitarist, was in a synthesizer pop duo with his sister Sophie. Calling themselves 'Sophie & Peter Johnston' (a name originating from famed English DJ John Peel who mistook their names written on the demo tape they sent him as the band name) they won two successive record contracts after the same DJ, normally reserved and understated, enthused wildly about their music saying it reminded him of the first time he heard Little Richard.
The second of the two deals, with Warner Brothers, resulted in the release of 3 singles and an album which in spite of widespread critical acclaim failed to achieve significant commercial success.
Pete carried on his involvement with music through the 1990's both as a writer/sound engineer/producer for other artists and as a sometime performer in his own right. He now runs a small home-based recording studio where the album 'Hide Away' was made.
Pete's musical influences are many and diverse but some key ones are: The Beatles, The Who, Fleetwood Mac, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Led Zeppelin, John Martyn, Van Morrison & Pat Metheny.
