Pat began singing at the tender age of fifteen in the Caribbean island of Trinidad having migrated from his native Jamaica. His love for music goes back as far as he can remember, as he would sing along with every song that played on the radio. His favorites ranged from Jackie Wilson; Sam Cooke; Ben E King and the Drifters; Sammy Davis Jr; Tony Bennett; Nat King Cole and Elvis Presley. He also loved the Big Band sounds of Duke Ellington; Benny Goodman and Count Basie, to name a few.
Patâs first public performance was at a Scoutâs meeting hall where he sang Michael Landonâs Stranger on the Shore. He was bitten by the performing bug. That experience inspired him to form a quartet called The Canaries, and the four friends went on to win an island wide televised talent show called Scouting For Talent. The group won the hearts of island residents. The Canaries performed at various charity functions such as hospitals, orphanages, prisons and tea parties since the boys were too young to play in clubs. Due to limited opportunities, the group disbanded and Pat eventually returned to his hometown in Jamaica. He joined the Jay Walkers, a small group of guys that played pop; R&B classics and rock steady. This venture was a local hit with the small town crowds, but it was time to move on. His sights were now set on Canada.
Patâs professional singing career dates back to the late 1960âs when he broke onto the Toronto music scene playing numerous club dates with several local bands such as "The Experiments"; "New Directions"; "Toronto Revival" and "The PG Reid Band." Those were the heydays of R&B as they packed local clubs; university pubs and dance halls during the 70âs and early 1980âs. Pat studied voice training under Miss John at the University of Torontoâs Royal Conservatory of Music, and attended Humber Collegeâs Jazz Program for a short time where his vocal coach was Clarke Anderson. Here he was exposed to the mechanics of music theory; piano; rhythm and vocal ensemble.
After covering many miles across Southern Ontario and Newfoundland, Pat decided to leave the music and club scene. He decided to get a day job and attended University part time. Although he did not know it at the time, the Lord was calling him to sing His music. Pat knew there was a void in his life. Many years passed and many trials endured before he heeded the Lordâs voice.
At the lowest point in his life, Pat called out to the Lord and He answered. He will never forget that morning when he was driving to his job as a social worker; he literally threw his hands up in the air and called on Jesus for help. There and then in the thick of rush hour traffic, the presence and the power of the Lord filled the car. Pat actually heard the Lordâs voice saying: ââ¦I am with youâ¦donât worryâ¦â This awesome experience was not to be the last.
While he was ironing a shirt and watching the televised Christian show One Hundred Huntley Street, and listing to a singer praising Jesus, somehow the words of that song spoke to Patâs heart and he began to cry uncontrollably. It was there and then that he felt something he will never forget; he felt two very strong loving arms as they wrapped themselves around him. The experience was so powerful and real that all Pat could do was cry and cry tears of joy. Again he heard the Lordâs tender loving voice: ââ¦Donât you know you are mineâ¦?â At that very moment, Pat accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his saviour! Since then there have been many trials and testing, but Pat has been able to hang in due to the Lordâs Blessings and Patâs loving family. All praise and worship to The Lord Jesus Christ who inspired all the original songs on this first CD. Praise be to God!!
