ROCK: Folk Rock, ROCK: Roots Rock
Details:
Before his solo career, Shawn Pander gained recognition in Texas with his band Soular Slide, winning awards such as Best New Artist and Best Rock/Pop Band in Texas. In his solo work, he sought to infuse acoustic rock with folk and blues, and to finally step up to the microphone. "At first, it was hard to get up from behind the drum kit. I was so used to hiding back there, but I love to sing and it wasn't long before the words began pouring out of my mouth."
Since Pander relocated to Los Angeles in Sept. 2004, his career has launched at record speed. He gained national exposure on the Dr. Phil show during a segment called Real Talent. His live performance on the show made waves among the audience, and beyond. Due to his popularity, Dr. Phil had his cameras film Pander throughout the process of recording one of his songs with Grammy award winning producer Steve Buckingham in Nashville and invited him back to the show to perform his new hit, Simplicity. "He is a show favorite," says Dr. Phil producer Julie Ross. "He has a smoky voice reminiscent of Dave Matthews and John Mayer."
The 25-year-old started writing lyrics at 14 and has been playing in bands for years, but he is just beginning to come into his own. "The early songs were," he says, "just for myself and whatever girl I was trying to woo." But now, he says, "what I'm really about is telling stories and singing melodies that people can sing back to me."
