Tehachapi? Yes, Tehachapi, California. Who would have thought this small mountain town would be a hotbed of folk music. Well, folk music, maybe, but the Celtic Music of Ireland and Scotland? Paint A Rose paints these styles with a fresh brush on this recording aptly titled âIn Full Bloom.â
I met the members of Paint A Rose, along with fiddler Maury Richmond, under delightful circumstances â surrounded by their music. When they learned about my background, they asked if I would run their sound for a Saint Patrickâs Day performance in Tehachapi. My wife, Laurie, and I became absolutely taken by their talents. I told them I couldnât believe they didnât have a CD out. When they told me they wanted to record one, I said I would love the opportunity to produce it.
Laurie and I left at the end of the show in a snow storm. When we got home to Ventura, we called Paint A Rose at their post-show party, as they insisted we do, to let them know we made the 2 ½ -hour trip home safely -- that is the kind of people they are. I was honored to have them tell me they had unanimously decided to have me produce this CD. I was further honored to hear that Maury Richmond voted for me twice!
This recording took place on April 20th and 21st, 2002, in two straight blocks of time â 10 hrs. and 12 hrs. Captured here are 14 wonderful tracks, which really amount to a total of 22 pieces of music â all absolute gems! Richly performed, each piece shows the essence of Paint A Rose and Maury Richmond and will touch many emotions.
The Paint A Rose and Maury Richmond-stamped versions of this Celtic music take you on a storybook journey, from such traditional pieces as âSpancil Hill,â âFields of Athenryâ and âRocky Road to Dublinâ to the blazing gallop of âTarboltan Lodgeâ and the foot-stomping Irish Pub-influenced âThe Orange and the Green.â The journey continues with an original tune, âWee Davyâs,â and on to the tear-inducing âMichaelâs Mazurkaâ and âMo Ghilie Mear.â My favorites along the road are âShe Moved Through The Fairâ and âSpancil Hill,â though it is hard to have a solid favorite. You may find your choice changes with each visit. Richly performed , each piece shows the essence of Paint A Rose and Maury Richmond and will touch many emotions.
Here are 11 of the 14 tracks recorded in 22 hours â a feat that is absolutely ridiculous. We recorded live in one room, Mountain Musicâs âjam room,â with virtually no overdubs other than the chior-esque vocal choruses. So please, sit back, relax, and let yourself escape into the enchantment and adventure of Paint A Rose and Maury Richmond.

Deborah Hand

Deborah was born into a musical family, where Papa sang bass and Mama (Betty Noyes) was the voice of Dumboâs mother in the Disney cartoon. When Debby was 8, she began cello lessons, but she dates her âfolkyâ days back to the age of 3, when her mother gave her a plastic ukulele and taught her to sing âThe Old Gray Mare.â
At Principia College and UCLA, Deborah studied history and political science. At the University of Washington, she added ethnomusicology, learning to play the Japanese koto and to sing in quarter-tones.
Deborah went on to a non-musical career as a journalist and radio producer, and became an instructor at Emerson College. Family necessities called her back to California in 1990. She can now be found at Mountain Music in Tehachapi, teaching cello, performing as Principal Cellist for the local symphony orchestra, and moonlighting as a bass player for a local gospel group.
Her interest in Celtic Music is self-evident from the red hair and freckles that attest to her Scots and Irish heritage. Like Maury Richmond, Debby has studied with Alasdair Fraser at Valley of the Moon Scottish Fiddle School and plays with the Los Angeles Scottish Fiddlers.

Wee Davy Gamble

Wee Davy Gamble was born in Bakersfield on March 19, 1968. He grew up in Tehachapi and attended school there where he was a member of various musical groups, including band, chorus and jazz band. While in his teens, Wee Davy began to study classical guitar. He continued his musical education at Santa Monica College and Bakersfield College. He is presently a music education major at California State University Bakersfield.
Before joining Paint a Rose and becoming âWee Davy,â David performed with various rock, jazz and classical groups throughout his life. He now teaches classical guitar at Mountain Music. He has a 7-year-old daughter, Joy.


Dave Brown

Dave was born in New York, but raised in Colorado throughout his school years.
While in junior high school, his parents forced him to play the accordion for five years. He finally threw the thing in a dumpster, got married at too early an age, moved to Idaho, took up the rock guitar, and got divorced. But he kept the guitar, for which the other members of Paint a Rose are thankful.
In 1985, Dave moved to Tehachapi to work as an electrical engineer in the wind energy industry. He started playing Celtic music with a former Tehachapi band, âOff to California.â Dave has a 13-year-old son, Clayton. He is currently an operations manager for a Tehachapi wind turbine company, is presently âavailableâ and rides a gnarly Harley.


Tim Kelly

Tim started banging on everything around the house as early as he can remember, to his parentsâ aggravation. He started playing actual percussion instruments and singing around age 10. While in high school in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, he continued singing in choral productions, musical comedies and the occasional opera, in addition to playing drums in rock and roll bands on the side. On to college at California State University Northridge, as a music major, he sang in all the ensembles. Rock and Roll still called after hours, with various bands.
Then, life called, real responsibilities and real jobs, such as managing the golf course at Stallion Springs near Tehachapi. Music had to take a back seat for many years. Later, Timâs Irish heritage started to come out with a love of the Chieftains and Guinness. For an anniversary present, Timâs wife, Kimber, bought him a bodhran for him to just tinker around on â essentially to keep him from banging on everything in the house. One or two Mountain Music jam sessions later, âPaint a Roseâ was born, and Kimber is still shaking her head at what a simple anniversary gift has wrought. Tim has a 21-year-old daughter, Jamie, and a 13-year-old son, Sean, who plays trumpet on âIn Full Bloom.â

Dennis Massie

Born mid-way through the last century in Wet-stern Washington State, Dennis was soon following in the family tradition of âpiano lessons, which you can quit after six years.â Without excessive practicing he managed Rachmaninoff and Gershwin by the eighth grade, and occasionally played the pepto-pink accordion his mother found at God-knows-where.
In fifth grade, while still taking piano, Dennis took up the mellophone, which eventually led to ârealâ French horn playing in high school.
Through the years, Dennis studied both piano and organ, as well as solfeggio and music theory in college. In the 1970s, he managed a piano and organ store on the California coast and played keyboards in an M-O-R rock band, âBreakwater.â He has always enjoyed making keyboard arrangements from âfake bookâ lead lines.
Dennis has published two novels and designed and built thousands of stained glass windows. He has also been tuning and rebuilding pianos since 1970. Dennis presently plays horn in the Tehachapi Community Orchestra and teaches piano. He has three children.
Oh, yes, he is a True Virgo and can be a real nit-picky pain in the ________..
