Details:
In 2003, internationally known oboist Bonnie Griffiths Pantely created âPop Goes the Oboe,â which features the oboe and English horn exploring various titles of pop and jazz styled music, as well as original compositions.
Having performed and toured as a professional musician for many years, Bonnie is conservatory trained and has received awards and distinctions as a jazz, pop, and classical artist. Though she has served as an oboist with such acclaimed ensembles as the Detroit Symphony, Pittsburgh Chamber Symphony, and Florida Orchestra, her passions favor the pop music styles. âThough I was trained and have performed as a classical musician for many years, all my life I have been surrounded by jazz and pop music,â says Bonnie. âI knew deep down that it was only a matter of time before I ventured seriously into the popular music world. When I was young, my mother booked big-bands such as Stan Kenton, Maynard Ferguson, and Buddy Rich to our city to perform. After the concerts she had them all over to the house. It was great!â
Bonnie has three CDs to date, including âAn Oboe Holidayââoffering a classic variety of Christmas holiday music, âPop Goes the Oboeââwhich features standard hits as well as original selections, and âAn Oboe Originalââthe latest release, featuring all original songs and arrangements by Bonnie Griffiths Pantely.
Of âAn Oboe Original,â Bonnie says, âI loved playing around with and mixing different styles and sounds. Throughout the CD you can hear hints of smooth jazz, pop, native American, classical, Asian, Celtic, gospel, new age, and more. It was a lot of fun to create.â
One international review, from Australiaâs Reeding Matter magazine, comments on the disc as follows: âThe upbeat track, with big-band riffs, poppy back-beats, and a bit of vocal sampling, are pretty foot-tapping, even quite funky at times...'Empty Me,' on oboe accompanied by harp and cello sounds, is reminiscent of a movie soundtrack, or even Enya, with lyrical and expressive playing. 'Bagpipe Sound' is a simple bagpipe-styled melody, played stylishly and recorded with great ambiance on the oboe sound. 'China Nee' also sounds like the soundtrack to a movie, with an expansive folky melody, and effective use of various Chinese instrument sounds.â
Among other distinctions, Bonnie is a member of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (the GRAMMY Awards), president of Libroman, Inc. (which is dedicated to supporting childrenâs literacy), the International Double Reed Society, and the American Federation of Musicians.
