Paper or Plastic is the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge of music. Largely untamed, but a vast, underutilized resource. The young bandâs latest release, âBest of Luck to Cody James!â taps into their rich talent lying just beneath the surface. If properly harnessed, the band feels that the album could power every SUV in America for at least two and a half years.

Paper or Plasticâs story starts backstage at a production of the musical âHMS Pinafore.â There, two youths, David Pollock (vocals, piano, guitar) and Ty Whittier (guitar), decided to dedicate their lives to surpassing Gilbert & Sullivan to be the greatest musical-writing duo who ever lived.
After a few noteworthy attempts, their collective path, along with orchestral accompaniment Ian Millhollen (bass) and Joey Harmon (drums), took a decidedly different track from the hallowed composers/playwrights.

They developed a unique pop/rock sound influenced by Elvis Costello, David Bowie, The Strokes, Bob Dylan, and Frank Sinatra (yes, seriously). The first show featuring David, Ty, Ian and Joey all together was an invite to Seattle to showcase at the Experience Music Project in February 2005, which proved to be a highly successful debut-- they won the "Audience Choice Award" in front of a crowd who had come to support the other local bands. (If they've ever stolen your fans, they sincerely apologize. If they've ever stolen your girl, they'd gladly do it again, only quicker).

Though Pollock and Whittier insist that their best songs can be found on Paper or Plasticâs latest release (namely âWest Virginia,â âNeckties,â âGay Bar,â and âFor The Moneyâ - featuring veteran tenor sax messiah Tim Bryson), they acknowledge the significance of their previous two albums. After all, the escapist âCome Againâ and rock opera spectacular âThe Stationâ (just kidding) led them up to âCody Jamesââ wide front door. They knocked. He answered. They punched him in the face.
