Details:
SOME OTHER TIME..PERHAPS consists of 23 compositions, each containing elements of rhythmic innovation,
odd meter, and/or no meter...which gives some meaning to the CD title.

Most of the compositions exist as audio only, but two of them have full scores and instrument parts for live per-formance. One is "Contrivance", the other "Air & Prelude". Contrivance has three movements, is published by PDR Music(ASCAP) and has no performance history. It is scored for piccolo, flute, oboe, english horn, clarinet, 4 horn in F, 3 trombone, tuba, timpani, & 2 percussion. Air & Prelude has two movements, is also published by PDR Music(ASCAP), and has not been performed. It is for solo trombone and pre-recorded material on CD. The first section (Air) is lyric and not technically demanding - the second section (Prelude) requires a certain amount of virtuosity. Both compositions could be described as contemporary, modern, new music, partly atonal, rhythmic, harmonic, & lively. Scores and instrument parts are available from Patrick Riley.

Some of the compositions are not orchestral. Many have a jazz, latin, or soundtrack feel. Enjoy!

Getting personal...

Now that I'm retired from teaching instrumental music and performing music full time, much of my time is spent composing music. My training in music composition came early in my music career, but I was unable to pursue music composition as much as I wanted, due to teaching and playing music. Doing music composition at this time of my life is very enjoyable and a part of my daily routine.

Music training began very early in my life with private piano lessons, and private and class instruction on various instruments in elementary school, junior high school, high school and college.

My early music composition training was at a time when computers were not available to almost everyone as they are today. Yes, there once was a time when there were no computers. Composition was usually done at a piano with music score paper and a pencil. Unless the composer had a performing group available to him, the work was never performed or actually heard by the composer. Computer software now enables great realizations of compositions using samples of acoustic instruments. And, one can compose electronic music...the finished CD is the performance...and musicians are not needed to perform the work. Is this great, or what?
